We Are Progressing

"I have discovered in life that there are ways of getting almost anywhere you want to go, if you really want to go."
- Langston Hughes

As I reflect on how far we have come and where we are headed, I cannot express how very grateful I am for all who have contributed to who we are today.  As Sabine's Hallway celebrated its 14th anniversary, I want to take this moment to thank our clients, vendors, staff and families for helping us get this far.  Now that we are in our teenage years, there is still a lot of maturing to do.  To that end, we are thankful to have both experience and youth on our side, giving us room to transition and grow through the challenges that lie ahead.  During the current state of the world, we are truly appreciative of being able to educate, serve, and empower the community for the last 14 years and for many years to come.

When Governor Cuomo closed businesses earlier this year in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, I kept thinking about all the lost opportunities and I started to sink into a depression.  I soon learned that I was not alone, I decided to change my attitude and focus on how I could use the time productively.  Later, when the West Indian Day Parade was cancelled to help control the spread of COVID-19 throughout the city, I was inspired to use our virtual platforms to highlight Caribbean-American culture and contributions to our Brooklyn communities.  Working with local artists and community leaders, I produced a documentary special, Culture and Beauty Beyond COVID-19, showcasing all the West Indian community has to offer.  If you haven't already done so, check it out on our IGTV or on our YouTube channel.  Like, subscribe and share it with others!

As we endeavor to find more ways to connect virtually, I'm relaunching a monthly "Salon Talks"  series on our YouTube channel.  Each month, we'll cover a topic on holistic wellness, lifestyle and community affairs.  Please subscribe to our YouTube channel to catch our monthly sessions.  Message us on Facebook or Instagram (@sabineshallway) with questions or topics that you'd like us to cover over the coming months.

IT'S HERE!! Lurie Daniel Favors New Book: Afro State of Mind

IT'S HERE!!!

After much anticipation we are pleased to announce that attorney & author Lurie Daniel Favors' book "Afro State of Mind: Memories of A Nappy Headed Black Girl" is finally here!

You've heard about this book for months and eagerly wondered when it would be available.

You listened to attorney & author Lurie Daniel Favors speak and knew you wanted to hear more.

You checked the website for details and signed up for the update emails.

You enjoyed her youtube videos and forwarded her blog posts

And now your wait is over!

We are pleased to invite you to Lurie's book release event on Sunday June 30, 2013 at Sabine's Hallway Natural Hair Salon (details below). There you will hear from the author and be among the first to purchase her newly released book, Afro State of Mind: Memories of A Nappy Headed Black Girl.

ASOM: Memories of A Nappy Headed Black Girl is not your typical natural hair book. This is not a "how-to manual" for hair care and styles. It is not a "twist this way" or "moisturize that way" book. This book is a coming of age story about a Black girl learning to love her hair and by extension learning to love herself.

The book recalls the moments when Lurie first discovered that nappy hair was a "problem" in search of a solution. She describes her youthful search for something - anything - to make her hair straight (and keep it straight) so that she could finally be considered one of the "good hair" girls.

You'll laugh and cry as she recounts her experiences when her Big Chop went wrong. She writes about finding love as a natural girl - even though she did not meet the definition of a girl with "pretty hair". You will be entertained (and a bit horrified) as she describes her experiences as a natural head abroad and surprised at the ways in which natural hair is viewed around the world.

Lurie is honest about her trials as a natural head in corporate America and freely shares her hopes for the future of the natural hair movement.

We live in a world that rarely appreciates Black women. This book unpacks the history of hair in the Black community and is designed to be an inspiring reminder of the beauty and talent inherent within Black womanhood.

Lurie wrote this book because she believes:

"It is important that we change the thoughts that are in our heads so that we can embrace the hair that is on our heads. I wrote this book to challenge some of those believes and to encourage our sisters and members of the global community to embrace and value Black women just as we are without the need for alteration: naturally, beautifully and exactly the way God designed us to be."

Please join us Sunday June 30, 2013 for the first Afro State of Mind: Memories of A Nappy Headed Black Girl event!

A Warm & Heartfelt Thank You!

Hello Ladies and Gents,

We cannot thank you all enough for your overwhelming support at our January 20, workshop. It certainly was a blast to meet and greet so many new faces! And welcoming old friends felt good!

It was clear from the size of the audience and the energy in the room that there is a strong desire to learn about proper Hair Care routines. The discussion regarding the connection between our physical health and our hair was very well received and an eye opener for many.

We explored a discussion about the types of foods that first nourishes the body and then by extension help yourhair. We examined 1. food supplements verses vitamins which are chemically derived; and 2. information on how to take care of your skin from our very own esthetician on staff.

We were very pleased to hear from Lurie Daniel Favors, a consumer rights attorney with a background in Africana studies (and my daughter!), who touched on the connection between self-esteem and Black hair. The audience was spell bound as she shared an excerpt from her upcoming book "Afro State of Mind: Memoirs of a Nappy Headed Black Girl," a story designed to help you change what's in your head so that you can better embrace what's on your head.

Last but not least we served a light refreshing raw/vegan vegetarian wrap with a nettle cuppiccino tea and peppermint water. And guests were eager to purchase the yummy raw kale chips & raw oatmeal cookies that were on sale.

The topics that we touched on were just a prelude to a much more in depth teaching we will feature in February. See details on that workshop below. We are so thrilled to have shared this wonderful experience with you and truly appreciate our clients and friends. Stay warm, be well and remember:

Your Hair + Health = Beauty!

With love,

Internal Spring Cleansing

Well, well today is the first day of my journey through internal cleansing and spiritual healing. I am planning on doing the fast for 21 days. For the pass five years I have been doing internal cleansing, however I've never gone longer than 7 days. This is defiantly going to be a challenge for me...but I am up for it. What is life with out a little challenge....good things don't come easy. The journey of spring cleansing fast is Vernal Equinox (the welcoming of spring as I understand it). Which starts on 1March and ends 21 March. What better way to gain clarity, positive energy, lose bad habits, rued of disease than to fast and pray. My goals are to be more disciple with my eating habits, to be more in touch with my thoughts, grow closer to God. WITH GOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE! During the fast make sure to keep activities to a minimum. One should not run, lift weights and such. Walking for 30 minutes is recommended and/or yoga. Mediate and think positive thoughts, allow God to lead you into a Great Space. I and WORTHY! Here is the Spring Cleansing Fast Plan Breakfast: Berry powder, water(quart), half banana(ripe), four soaked dates, a handful of soaked raisins, tablespoon of psyllium husks. Liquefy and drink slowly. Two hrs. later drink at least 32 ounces of distilled water. Meditate for at least 15 mins. Lunch: Juice the organic veggies( kale, celery, beets, carrots and parsley) at least 32 ounces. Two hrs. later drink 32 ounces of distilled water. Snack: Blend 32 ounces of organic (not concentrated) orange or pineapple juice with four cloves of fresh garlic and a table spoon of olive oil. Two hrs. later drink 32 ounces of distilled water. Dinner: Blend 32 ounces of water with green super food and a tablespoon of psyllium husks the other half of banana, dates and raisins can be added. Meditate for at least 15 mins. Nightcap: Bring handful of dried orange peels to boil in 32 ounces of water for 30 seconds: turn off the fire and add a tea bag of each Herb (gentian; Yarrow;Angelica (dried orange peels) drink the tea without adding any sugar, honey,or sweetener. Must use Organic fruits and stainless steels to store your liquids. I prepare my juices for lunch and dinner the day before. Breaking the fast is just as important as starting the fast. On the 22nd at noon in the end the fast with a pound of grapes. For dinner have a raw salad with spinach, shredded carrots, avocado, alfalfa spouts, cumbers, with raw sunflower seeds for the ladies and pumpkin for the males. Make sure to get at least 8 hours of sleep your body will need it and will thank you. For more advice email me at sabineshallway@gmail.com Good Luck

Hair, hair, and more hair.

Hair, hair, and hair that's what everyone seems to be talking about these days. Short hair, long hair, no hair. Some women are obese with their hair. From going to the salon every two weeks to buying every new product on the market ( product junkies). Just about everyone has gone through some hair situation at one point or another. I remember when I had to have a curly weave stage. Oh, boy did I love to wear a curly weave. The first few weeks after getting my curly do. I would be on top of the world. I had so much confidence and sex appeal. At the time I didn't know what it was with that curly do, but it changed me immediately. I would attract so many more men than I usual with my curly do in. When I really started to pay attention to why men were being drawn to me I realize it wasn't the hair. It was the confidence and the sex appeal that I was sending out (people are attracted to positive energy)when I had the curly do in. Sometimes we spend a lot of time and energy into our appearances and not enough time on self improvement and health. Hair is just a small piece to who we (you) really are. Love yourself with the weave, without the weave, short, long, relax, natural and all. Note that what you put into you body is what you get out of your body. Once you nurturer yourself with positive energy and in return you will send off positive energy. I no longer wear the weaves and I'm still pulling in the fellas with my natural self.
